"Perceive yourself as others do and you can make meaningful changes to your social behaviour that can make a positive lasting impression on everyone you meet."
- Beth Silcox
As the month of May is here, there is an aliveness and excitement in the air. I went to London recently for a day of meetings and on my way back I indulged in what has become a healthy habit over the past seventeen years. I love to go to the book section of W.H.Smith and browse the top twenty books of the month.
This month I found a gem of a book called 'Enchantment' by Guy Kawasaki. It is all about how companies like Apple create such enchanting products and how some people always seem to enchant others.
So many of the tips this month have come about as a result of the insights shared in this book.
Two Tips on Accepting Others
- Everyone is better than you at something
- People are more similar than they are different
Three Tips on Creating Trustworthiness in Companies
- Help someone who can be of absolutely no use to you
- Don't be too quick to shoot down other people's ideas
- Give people the benefit of the doubt
Three Tips on What Outstanding Leaders Do
- They are perpetual learners
- They don't need constant approval and recognition
- Highly proficient in learning from experience
Three Tips on What Leaders Do When They Take Charge of an Organisation
- Pay attention to what is going on
- Set a new direction
- Get the buy in from everyone in the organisation to focus on that direction
One Tip on Why the Past can be Stubborn
It holds on to itself for fear that it will be forgotten or thrown away. I encourage you to shake free from the past and take a few small steps towards whatever it is you need to do.
Today as you read these tips, I encourage you to do something unimaginable. Commit to take action and enchant yourself and everyone you meet.
Before I go, I want you to grab a pen and paper and answer this question:
- If you were to achieve just one thing for the rest of 2011, what would it be?
Be honest with yourself, get clear and write out the answers to these questions:
- Why is it important to you?
- How many years have you been wanting this?
- Now write out all the excuses that you could use to stop you getting there.
- Share your desire and action with someone before the end of this day.
For the month of May, go out, inspire and enchant everyone you meet and connect with. Enchantment is all about the art of changing hearts and minds into focussed action.
Wishing you a month of possibilities and enchantment.
